Don't start a fire: This is how to dispose of fireworks PARKER, Colo. (KDVR) -- A two-alarm fire destroyed two homes in Parker overnight and injured a firefighter. The fire sparked in the 10700 block of Kimball Street.Fire investigators say the cause was the improper disposal of legal fireworks. The used fireworks were placed in a plastic bin outside the garage of one of the homes."There was still enough heat left in that firework that it smoldered, created open flame, spread to that plastic trash can, spread to the fencing, and then up the sides of the house," public information officer Eric Hurst said.3 steps to dispose of fireworksHurst said the fireworks were permissible in the area because they didn't leave the ground or explode, but they still pose a risk and need to be disposed of properly."What that means is taking all of those spent fireworks with gloved hands, making sure you don't get burned, and submersing them into a bucket of water, or an old metal can — anything that you may have around the house that's non-combustibl...

Pozniak: Is your community prepared to deal with a severe hurricane? The 2023 Atlantic Hurricane Season officially began on June 1.  Government meteorologists are predicting that several major hurricanes may hit our region which is why communities must begin to plan. The destructive impact of hurricanes can be deadly and far-reaching causing significant damage to infrastructures, disrupting essential services, and posing severe risks to public safety.Local mayors and town managers must now begin preparations to effectively deal with potential power outages, road flooding and closures, water and sewage plant disruptions, and serious structural damage to homes and businesses.Unfortunately, many of our local city and town managers do not have a high level of experience directing an emergency response to a major hurricane impacting their community. A risk and response multi-disciplinary team must be created, i...

Brennan & Tompkins: Taxpayers, law enforcement bear burden of Mass. menthol ban There have been no winners in the Massachusetts flavored tobacco ban debacle: the state didn’t win, retailers didn’t win, customers wishing to buy legal adult products didn’t win and those looking to reduce smoking didn’t win.The ban has been a colossal failure that has only siphoned millions from the state with no impact on youth smoking while creating a massive problem for law enforcement charged with policing a thriving new illicit market. The law went into effect in 2020 and resulted in a menthol cigarette excise tax revenue loss of nearly $127 million in the 12-months following the ban. Since then, that revenue has not returned, leaving Massachusetts with untold millions in lost excise taxes, as nearly 90% of sales have shifted out of state, primarily to bordering New Hampshire and Rhode Island. All these crucial lost tax dollars could have been used for awareness, education, prevention and public health. Instead, they’ve gone to other states. What is crystal clear is that the un...
