SANTA CRUZ — A longtime Santa Cruz High School employee may spend Christmas in jail after police arrested him this week at his Westside home on a 2-decade-old juvenile sexual assault charges.Ronald Eugene Salinas, 63, worked as a part-time high school band staffer in 2001 when he allegedly sexually assaulted a student in the school band. $1 million in goods recovered from California retail theft crew, authorities say

A specialized unit of the California Highway Patrol has recovered more than $1 million worth of stolen cosmetics and other merchandise during searches this week in Paramount and Los Angeles, and they arrested a woman allegedly connected to an organized theft ring that targeted retailers across Southern California.The crew has hit a variety of local retailers, including CVS, Sephora, Ulta Beauty, Rite Aid, Nordstrom and the 99 Cents Only store, the CHP said.Brenda Yanez, 48, was arrested on suspicion of multiple charges, including grand theft and possession of stolen property. Investigators with the CHP Southern Division Organized Retail Crime Taskforce have been working with various loss prevention personnel to return the stolen merchandise to retailers, according to a CHP statement.The stolen merchandise was found when investigators served search warrants at a warehouse in Paramount and at The Makeup Store on Whittier Boulevard in Los Angeles. Former California cop sentenced to life in prison for ’94 robbery dies in San Quentin cell

An ex-Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy who was sentenced to death for fatally shooting a Yorba Linda supermarket manager during a robbery in 1994 died on Wednesday, Dec, 21, in his San Quentin cell, authorities said.Stephen Redd, 78, was found unresponsive in his cell at the San Quentin Rehabilitation Center on Wednesday afternoon and was pronounced dead by medical staff, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. The cause of his death had not been determined as of Thursday.Redd was a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy from 1967 to 1973 when he resigned and, subsequently, turned to a life of crime, court records show.During a holdup at an Alpha Beta store in Yorba Linda on July 18, 1994, Redd shot 34-year-old Timothy McVeigh after he interrupted the robbery while coming to the aid of a co-worker.Redd then fled with $156 dollars.He was arrested a year later by a U.S. Park Police detective in San Francisco. (KRON) – One person is dead after a shooting in Antioch on Friday. Antioch police were dispatched to the 800 block of Sunset Drive due to reports of a shooting around 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 22.  Two Antioch minors killed in fatal hit-and-run Upon arrival, Antioch officers located a 26-year-old male suffering from a gunshot wound. According to police, officers and paramedics began rendering first aid. However, the victim succumbed to his injuries.Patrol officers located a suspect nearby and detained him without incident, police said. The victim’s name is being withheld until proper family notification has been made. According to police, this incident appears to be an isolated incident. This is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Gragg at (925)-779-6889 or the Antioch Police Department’s non-emergency line at (925)-778-2441.

Milpitas police nab alleged robber who also drove stolen vehicle

(BCN) -- A 30-year-old man accused of taking the tools of a construction worker in Milpitas was arrested Friday, police said.The Milpitas Police Department said on its Facebook account that the suspect, who was later identified as a San Jose resident, was traced with the help of the Automated License Plate Reader technology as he was found to be driving a stolen vehicle from San Jose.Police said that within three minutes after the alleged robbery took place around 9:20 a.m., officers arrived and obtained the license plate of the suspect's vehicle, the location of which was simultaneously alerted to them through the ALPR.The vehicle was located within minutes and a pursuit operation ensued reaching the city of Fremont.The suspect was arrested with the assistance of the Fremont police, and the construction worker's tools were returned, the Milpitas police said.Copyright © 2023 Bay City News, Inc.

90-year-old pedestrian dies due to being struck by vehicle in Georgetown

A 90-year-old pedestrian has died from being struck by a vehicle in Georgetown on Saturday morning.Halton police responded to reports of a collision between a pedestrian and a vehicle just before 7:30 a.m. at Mountainview Road South.The pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene.The cause of the incident is under investigation, and Halton police’s Collision Reconstruction Unit attended and has taken over the investigation.Several witnesses remained at the scene, however any other witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage is asked to contact police.

A rebel attack on Burundi from neighboring Congo has left at least 20 dead, the government says

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — At least 20 people have been killed in Burundi following an attack by a rebel group based in the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo, a Burundian government spokesman said Saturday.Among those killed were 12 children and three women, two of whom were pregnant, spokesman Jérôme Niyonzima said in a statement.The attack targeted nine homes on Friday evening in the western town of Vugizo, close to the Lake Tanganyika border with Congo, according to the Burundian government. RED-Tabara, a Burundian armed rebel group based in South Kivu, eastern Congo, claimed responsibility for the attack in a post on X, formerly Twitter. NEW YORK (AP) — Rapper Travell “G. Dep” Coleman, who walked into a New York police precinct in 2010 and admitted to committing a nearly two-decade-old cold case murder to clear his conscience, has been granted clemency by Gov. Kathy Hochul.Now 49, Coleman has served 13 of a 15-year-to-life sentence. With his sentence being commuted by the Democratic governor, he will now be allowed to seek parole earlier than his original 2025 date. Coleman is one of 16 individuals granted clemency by Hochul in an announcement made Friday. They include 12 pardons and four commutations.
