Asher Hong overcame an uncharacteristic fall on the floor exercise to take the lead after the opening round of the U.S. men’s gymnastics championships Thursday night at SAP Center.Hong, a 19-year-old sophomore at Stanford, posted a total of 85.615 points, just ahead of 2017 national champion and 2020 Olympian Yul Moldauer at 85.548.Fred Richard, a sophomore at Michigan and the reigning NCAA all-around champion, was third at 85.469.Hong, third at the 2022 national championships, used a massive 15.455 on vault early in the competition to grab the lead. Woman abandoned dog at airport on her way to resort vacation, police say

PITTSBURGH (AP) — A woman accused of intentionally abandoning her dog at a Pennsylvania airport before she boarded a flight to a resort in Mexico has been charged with animal cruelty and related charges, authorities announced Thursday.The French bulldog that was found at a Pennsylvania airport. (Allegheny County Police Department via AP) Allison Lyn Gaiser, 44, tried to bring her French bulldog with her on a flight departing Aug. 4 from Pittsburgh International Airport, Allegheny County police said. She claimed the dog was an emotional support animal.Airline employees told her she could not bring the dog aboard because it did not meet the criteria for an emotional support animal and did not have a proper kennel.Gaiser was then seen on surveillance video pushing the dog in a stroller toward the airport’s short-term parking lot. Wolfson | KFF Health NewsMadera Community Hospital in California’s Central Valley, which ceased operations last December and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March, moved a step closer to reopening Thursday when California’s new fund for troubled hospitals said it was prepared to offer the facility up to $52 million in interest-free loans.The program is offering an additional $240.5 million in no-interest loans to 16 other troubled hospitals, including Beverly Community Hospital in Montebello and Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital in Hollister, both of which filed for bankruptcy earlier this year.Hazel Hawkins will get a loan of $10 million, and Beverly will get a bridge loan of $5 million while it is being bought out of bankruptcy by Adventist Health’s White Memorial in Los Angeles, according to the state’s Department of Health Care Access and Information, which unveiled the lending details Thursday.Adventist Health has also agreed conditionally to manage Madera if it ...

Man struck, killed by car in crosswalk in San Jose

(KRON) -- A man is dead after being struck by a car at the intersection of Landess and Morrill avenues just before 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, according to the San Jose Police Department. A 2007 Lexus sedan was traveling eastbound through a green traffic light at the intersection when it struck a man who was crossing southbound in a marked crosswalk.The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
