More than 60 supercars featured at F1 event

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Formula 1 is making its return to the Circuit of the Americas this weekend, and on Wednesday night, Austinites got to get into the spirit by checking out exotic cars.More than 60 cars were displayed at the nightclub Superstition ATX Wednesday night.Several automakers were featured, including Lamborghini, Corvette and Rolls Royce. The event also featured speakers, including Formula 1 driver AJ Alsup.The event was part of a final lead-up to the big race this weekend."We wanted to really just turn this week before F1, and the months leading up to Formula 1 in Austin into a festival for people that are in love with the sport and passionate about Formula 1," Anand Clemens, event coordinator with Austin Supercars and Exotic, said.Not only was it a way to show off some cool cars and get people ready for the big race, the event also benefited the Make-a-Wish Foundation.This weekend's Formula 1 race is set for Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Circuit of the Americas.

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden declared it is “vital for America’s national security” for Israel and Ukraine to succeed in their wars, making the case Thursday night for deepening U.S. involvement in two unpredictable foreign conflicts as he prepared to ask for billions of dollars in military assistance for both countries.If international aggression is allowed to continue, Biden said in a rare Oval Office address, “conflict and chaos could spread in other parts of the world.”“Hamas and Putin represent different threats,” Biden said. “But they share this in common. St. Louis man convicted in 2020 I-70 killing

ST. LOUIS - A St. Louis man was convicted Thursday for fatally shooting a man while the two were riding in the same car on Interstate 70.The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on May 15, 2020, on westbound I-70 near West Florissant Avenue.Brian Williams and Leonard Ward were riding in a vehicle driven by a friend, Edouard Claypool. Williams and Ward got into a verbal argument. At some point, Williams, who was in the backseat, produced a gun and shot Ward in the head three times.Ward died immediately. He was 53. (Photo courtesy of University of Colorado Athletics)The Colorado athletic department is mourning the loss of one of its all-time greats, as CU announced the recent passing of men’s basketball legend Burdette “Burdie” Haldorson.Haldorson, 89, passed away Oct. 13 in Colorado Springs.A two-time Olympic gold medal winner, Haldorson was inducted into the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame in 1977 and CU’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999 as part of the organization’s second induction class. He was the first CU basketball player inducted into the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame.Haldorson averaged 10.6 points and 7.2 rebounds in his first season with the Buffaloes in 1952-53. Authorities respond to HazMat incident at L.A. City Hall

Authorities with the Los Angeles Fire Department, Los Angeles Police and LAPD's HazMat Units responded to L.A. City Hall Thursday after the discovery of a mysterious white powder.The calls came in just before 2 p.m. after the unknown substance was found in the first floor mail room.Two city hall workers were evaluated by paramedics and transported to a hospital for further evaluation as a precaution after opening a package containing the unknown substance. The workers didn’t show any signs or symptoms of illness, authorities said.Sky5 footage showed a large number of first responders at the scene.The mail room and a few nearby businesses were evacuated by LAPD personnel and the LAPD Bomb Squad was also on the scene assisting authorities. Los Angeles Street between Temple and First streets was shut down due to the investigation. The type of substance that was discovered was not immediately known.

On a night when the city passed a resolution castigating the Martinez Refining Company for their performance over the last 12 months, the refinery’s manager issued a set of apologies and an acknowledgment that if the company doesn’t get its act together soon, the consequences could be dire.“We understand that not only being a good neighbor, but truly our license depends on our ability to operate in a safe and responsible manner,” said Daniel Ingram, manager of the Martinez Refining company. “We don’t take these issues lightly.”Ingram’s report included a more full accounting of the spent catalyst release last November, when residents woke up to a layer of fine white silt on their cars and window sills.
