HERMANN, Mo. - The man accused of killing one Hermann, Missouri, police officer and wounding another in a double shooting has been taken into custody.The Missouri State Highway Patrol confirmed Kenneth Simpson's arrest to FOX 2's Chris Hayes Monday afternoon. The shooting happened just before 9:20 p.m. Sunday at the Casey’s on Market Street in Hermann. Illinois enacts mandatory paid leave 'for any reason'

CHICAGO (AP) — Illinois will become one of three states to require employers to offer paid time off for any reason after Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed a law on Monday that will take effect next year.Starting Jan. 1, Illinois employers must offer workers paid time off based on hours worked, with no need to explain the reason for their absence as long as they provide notice in accordance with reasonable employer standards.Just Maine and Nevada mandate earned paid time time off and allot employees the freedom to decide how to use it, but Illinois’ law is further reaching, unencumbered by limits based on business size. Similarly structured regulations that require employers to offer paid sick leave exist in 14 states and Washington, D.C., but workers can only use that for health-related reasons.Illinois employees will accrue one hour of paid leave for every 40 hours worked up to 40 hours total, although the employer may offer more. (AP) — Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has agreed to a three-year, $67.5 million contract with the Las Vegas Raiders, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press on Monday.The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the deal can’t be announced until Wednesday.Garoppolo’s contract includes $34 million in the guaranteed money, the person said.Garoppolo played for the San Francisco 49ers the past six seasons. Student dies in physical education class accident in Lawndale

A Los Angeles-area animal welfare organization is getting into the holiday spirit by cutting adoption fees for pitbulls and pitbull mixes at two adoption centers.The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles is offering $25 donations to celebrate St. "Pitty's" Day — aka, St. Patrick's Day.Eligible pitbull breeds can be adopted at spcaLA's adoption centers in Hawthorne and Long Beach.The adoption special is limited for qualified adopters and excludes dogs who are younger than 3 months. Burglars broke into UCLA frat house while occupants slept: Police

Police are looking for a man and a woman who burglarized a UCLA fraternity house while students were asleep inside last week.The hot prowl burglary occurred around 8 a.m. Friday at a frat house in the 500 block of Landfair Avenue, according to the UCLA Police Department.The two suspects got away with laptops, wallets and other property belonging to the residents while the victims slept, police said.The man is described as being 30 years old, with thin, short black hair and was wearing a blue jean jacket, a gray undershirt with a pink logo, blue jeans, a gray backpack and white shoes.The woman is described as having a medium build and was wearing a black bucket hat, a blue surgical mask, a dark blue jean jacket, a gray undershirt, black pants and pink shoes and was carrying an orange backpack and blue handbag.No injuries were reported during the break in.No further details about the incident have been released, and police said the case remains under investigation.
