USPS cracks down on mail theft from stolen 'arrow keys'

AUSTIN (KXAN) -- It's the busiest time of year for the U.S. Postal Service -- and thieves are taking advantage. "We are currently in the middle of the holiday shopping season, which means additional packages will be delivered" in the coming days, said U.S. Postal Inspector and Public Information Officer Silvia Torres. "Those eagerly awaited packages are, unfortunately, also attractive to thieves."In one southwest Austin community, surveillance video captured criminals stealing mail with ease. By using stolen USPS master keys -- also called "arrow" or "universal" keys -- crooks are able to unlock multiple mailboxes at once."Yeah, not great. Not great at all," said Todd, a homeowner, whose mail was stolen. He asked KXAN not to use his last name or say where the area was out of fear for his safety. Busiest travel days Thursday and Friday at Lambert INT'L Airport

LOUIS - The holiday bustle has made it to St. Louis Lambert International Airport, with Thursday and Friday being the busiest travel days this week.A line can already be seen at the Delta ticket counter. Over on the big board, good news as of now: no delays for departures and arrivals so far Thursday.Here is the travel projection number from TSA for Lambert during this holiday season: Police bodycam video after Bar:PM crash under review TSA has released numbers for the two-week span that started back on December 13 and continues through the day after Christmas. Thursday and Friday are in the top five days in terms of travel numbers.TSA expects more than 17,500 passengers to pass through security Thursday at Lambert. On Friday, that number is expected to jump to nearly 17,800 passengers. For the entire two-week holiday period, TSA expects more than 228,000 travelers to pass through Lambert.

Crews investigating 'Tucker's Bar & Grill' fire in south St. Louis

ST. LOUIS - Firefighters at 'Tucker's Bar & Grill' reported a fire in the back of the building.This is on South Broadway near Catalan Street, in the patch neighborhood of south St. Louis. Suspect in dozens of burglaries arrested

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. - A smash-and-grab at a south county jewelry store leads to an arrest. The police say this man is responsible for more than a dozen other burglaries.The suspect is Joshua John Simmons-Pollard. Police said that he went on a crime spree in St. Louis City and County between November 30 and December 15. On December 6, he was accused of busting the windows of 'Glitter on Gravois' in Sappington Plaza, breaking into jewelry cases, and stealing several pieces. Simmons-Pollard is also accused of a burglary at Imo's on Jefferson, 'Tucker's Place' on South 12th Street, 'Courtesy Diner' on Hampton, an ATM on Manchester, and many more. Resolution against illegal immigration taking place today in Jefferson County, Missouri

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Mo. - The Jefferson County Council is taking up a controversial resolution at Thursday night's meeting.The resolution is against immigrants going to Jefferson County. A similar resolution came up before the St. Charles County Council last month, but it failed on a three-to-three tie vote. How much daylight will St. Louis have on the shortest day of 2023? St. Charles wanted to urge St. Louis City to not accept Latin immigrants from Chicago coming to the area through the Humanitarian Parole Program. Storm drops 3 inches of rain in an hour, brings widespread flooding to Ventura County

A slow-moving storm system dropped several inches of rain on parts of Ventura County, causing widespread flooding Thursday morning.So much rain accumulated in areas of Oxnard, Port Hueneme and Ventura that first responders had trouble responding to reports of flooding at some homes and businesses. Video showed several feet of water left vehicles stuck at the intersection of West Channel Islands Boulevard and South J. Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.) said Wednesday that the House Education Committee will expand its investigation into Harvard President Claudine Gay to include allegations that she committed plagiarism in academic work.The Education Committee previously held a hearing on campus antisemitism featuring Gay and the leaders of the University of Pennsylvania and MIT.
