Los Angeles County officials ID buildings in need of seismic retrofitting

More than 30 Los Angeles County-owned buildings are in need of seismic upgrades, according to a list released by the county.From structures at LAC+USC Medical Center, to the county's Hall of Administration in downtown Los Angeles, 33 buildings are at risk because they're built with non-ductile concrete, which uses "an inadequate configuration of steel reinforcing bars, which allows concrete to explode out of columns when shaken in an earthquake, a prelude to a catastrophic collapse," the Los Angeles Times reports. This building material has been heavily criticized as contributing to the massive damage in the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that killed more than 20,000 people in Turkey and Syria earlier this year. County officials hope to have the buildings retrofitted within 10 years, though the Times noted that "experts estimate [such efforts] will probably cost hundreds of millions of dollars."

Two shot in East Oakland

OAKLAND — A woman and a man were shot Monday evening in East Oakland, authorities said.Both the 29-year-old woman, who police were told lived in Pleasanton, and the 36-year-old man were in stable condition, authorities said.The shooting, which prompted a ShotSpotter alert, happened about 5:52 p.m. Monday in the 8900 block of MacArthur Boulevard.Police said the woman was with a group of people standing outside when someone opened fire on them. She was the only one in the group hit by the gunfire, police said. She was wounded in the lower torso and was taken by ambulance from the scene to a hospital.The 36-year-old man, of Oakland — who was down the street from the group — was hit in the arm by a stray bullet, police said. He got his own transportation to a hospital.Two buildings were also hit by the gunfire, but no other injuries were reported.The shooter fled in a vehicle before police responded to the scene. Bay Area: 3.5 magnitude earthquake and two aftershocks jolt Peninsula

A 3.5 magnitude earthquake briefly shook the Peninsula on Tuesday morning followed by a pair of smaller aftershocks, according to the United States Geological Survey.The main quake’s epicenter was on the foothills near the Pacifica neighborhood of Vallemar. It occurred at 6:01 a.m. and was felt in parts of San Jose and the East Bay, according to the agency.Two aftershocks — both registered as being 2.6 magnitude — were reported near Pacifica at 6:03 and 6:04 a.m. respectively.The Cal Fire San Mateo-Santa Cruz Unit said in a tweet Tuesday morning that it had begun its earthquake procedure, meaning crews would inspect buildings and equipment for damage. By Eli Walsh | Bay City NewsAn elderly elephant at the Oakland Zoo was humanely euthanized Sunday due to worsening, degenerative and irreversible health issues, zoo officials said Monday.Lisa, a 46-year-old African elephant, had dealt with chronic age-related health issues for several years, according to the zoo, including eye ulcers, degenerative arthritis, foot and nail lesions and a recently developed ventral edema, which caused excessive fluid buildup in her stomach.Zoo staff developed a medical care plan for Lisa in an effort to ease the pain of her conditions, including physical therapy, pain medication, daily foot soaks in Epsom salt and two stem cell procedures in October 2022 and in January, in partnership with veterinarians at Michigan State University.Lisa first came to the zoo in 1979 and first showed signs of arthritis in 2013. Solano County Coroner officials on Monday identified the 11-year-old girl struck and severely injured in a Fairfield school crosswalk last week and later died as Terra Starr-Jackson.A spokeswoman for the Coroner said the girl died at 6:13 p.m. Sunday after the family reportedly decided to take her off life support at the UCSF Children’s Hospital in Oakland.The driver of the vehicle, 32-year-old Elena Lindsey McGraw-Ogans, of Fairfield, was arrested and booked into Solano County Jail midafternoon Thursday but, at some point, later posted bail and was released.Court records on Friday showed she was expected to be arraigned at 1:30 p.m. Monday in Solano County Superior Court on suspicion of felony DUI causing bodily injury, among other suspected offenses. (KRON) -- A series of magnitude 2.6 to 3.5 earthquakes hit about near Pacifica Tuesday morning, according to the United States Geological Survey.
