New Illinois law to try to curb bullying at schools through quicker parental notice

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) - A new law signed by Governor J.B. Pritzker earlier this month is trying to curb bullying at Illinois schools. One part of the law requires schools to report bullying incidents to parents within 24 hours of the school learning about it. Rep. Margaret Croke (D-Chicago), the House sponsor of the law, said the increased reporting is meant to cut down on bullying incidents at schools. A parent or guardian of both the bully and the victim will have to be notified by school officials."We know that that is not relegated to the schoolyard, like a kid can continue, unfortunately, to just kind of incessantly bully someone throughout the day, throughout the weekend," she said.Another part of the law focuses on changing the legal definition of cyberbullying. ST. LOUIS - The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department asks for the public's help with finding a man accused of sexually assaulting a minor. SLMPD says the crimes date back to May 29, 2023. Police report that a juvenile victim was sexually assaulted in the 3500 block of Bingham Avenue around 11 p.m. that night. 21-year-old woman missing since Tuesday night found safe

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. - A St. Louis County woman who went missing Tuesday evening has been located and is safe.According to the St. Louis County Police Department, the incident occurred just before 7 p.m. at a business in the 3200 block of Lemay Ferry Road.County police issued an endangered person advisory after learning the 21-year-old woman had been in an argument with family members and sent concerning text messages.Police cancelled the advisory Wednesday morning after she was found. No additional information was provided.

Goodwill of Colorado closed the fitting rooms at its 42 retail locations due to high levels of theft, substance abuse and vandalism, the company announced last week.In a statement released Thursday, Goodwill of Colorado said the decision was made for the safety of its shoppers and team members.“This decision was not made lightly,” the statement said. “We are experiencing high levels of theft, substance abuse and vandalism in our fitting rooms and needed to make a difficult decision in order to keep our team members and shoppers safe.”Goodwill communications manager Ashley Furst said the number of shoplifting incidents nearly doubled from January to May.“This wasn’t an easy decision,” Furst said. “We were seeing a lot of tags on the floor from items we put out on the sales floor and our ability to fulfill our mission is directly supported by our retail locations.”The fitting rooms have been closed at all of Goodwill’s Colora...

Coast Guard is bringing in more ships, vessels to search for lost Titanic tourist submersible

A Canadian surveillance vessel has detected underwater noises in the area where rescuers are searching for a submersible that went missing in the North Atlantic while bringing five people down to the wreck of the Titanic, authorities said Wednesday. Coast Guard officials were bringing in more ships and other vessels to search the more narrowly defined area, though the exact location and source of the sounds has not yet been determined.
