Gophers men’s basketball picks up commitment from unique and huge center The Gophers men’s basketball program picked up a commitment from a unique center on Thursday.The 6-foot-11, 330-pound Jack Wilson played football and basketball at Washington State and will be on scholarship for the Minnesota hoops team next season. The U men now have two remaining open scholarships for next year’s roster.Wilson, of Montara, Calif., was a reserve big man on the Cougars roster last season, coming off the bench to chip in during 14 games. He transitioned to basketball after appearing in 25 games for the Washington State football team as a walk-on, where he played primarily on special teams and at offensive tackle in spot duty.Wilson played basketball at both Idaho and Oregon State before transitioning to football. Crews continue work to contain Wednesday brush fire RICHMONDVILLE, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Crews are continuing efforts to fully contain brush fires that broke out in Otsego and Schoharie Counties on Wednesday. According to the Richmondville Fire Department, the fires are 90 percent contained. Get the latest, news, weather, sports and community events delivered right to your inbox! The brush fires were first reported along the railroad tracks in Richmondville shortly after 2 p.m. 16 fire departments responded with 66 firefighters and 15 NYS Rangers. NYS Police Aviation provided Helicopter Water Drops and Unmanned Aircraft Systems to monitor the operation. Three EMS Ambulance crews were readily available.Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing. Over 240 acres of land were involved. As of Thursday night, the Schoharie fires are contained and crews will concentrate efforts on Otsego County on Friday.

Motorcyclist dies after crash in Huntington Beach A 38-year-old Riverside man is dead after a traffic accident in Huntington Beach on Thursday, authorities announced.  Officers with the Huntington Beach Police Department responded to reports of a traffic collision involving a motorcycle on Warner Avenue and Brightwater Drive at around 3:45 p.m. At the scene, police found the 38-year-old motorcyclist in the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene, an HBPD news release stated.  Based on their preliminary investigation, authorities believe the motorcyclist was traveling at a high rate of speed on eastbound Warner Avenue when he appears to have lost control, resulting in a collision.  Authorities did not say if the collision was with another vehicle or if anyone else was injured as a result of the accident. Braves’ Arcia headed to IL with microfracture in left wrist ATLANTA (AP) — Atlanta Braves shortstop Orlando Arcia is headed to the injured list after tests on Thursday revealed a microfracture in his left wrist.Arcia suffered the injury in Wednesday night’s 5-4 win over the Cincinnati Reds. Arcia was hit on the wrist by a 97 mph fastball from Reds right-hander Hunter Greene in the second inning. Arcia left the game in the third, and the Braves said initial X-rays were negative.Ehire Adrianza replaced Arcia at shortstop. The Braves said Thursday Arcia will be placed on the injured list.
