Preschoolers with autism more likely to be expelled study finds

An estimated 16% of children with autism, around one in six, are expelled from preschool programs, according to new research coming out of the University of California, Riverside.  The study, which focused on reports of expulsion from child-care facilities and preschools by parents of 203 autistic children, found that the average age of children removed from these programs was just 3 years old.  “These little kids were asked to leave school because they demonstrated behaviors directly related to their autism,” UC Riverside School of Education professor and the study’s lead author, Jan Blacher, told UC Riverside News. “So, they were being expelled from preschool for the very problems that they needed school for.”  The study also found that characteristics of autism, like challenges communicating and repetitive behaviors, are sometimes viewed as misconduct, which can make children with autism targets for expulsion.  According to Blacher and her co-author, Abby Eise...

Deputies searching for armed man in Riverside County

Deputies are searching for a 22-year-old man who they believe is armed, officials with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department announced Wednesday.  On April 11, Lake Matthews Station Sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of a shooting inside a residence located in the 12000 block of Wildflower Lane in Lake Hills.  “The Reporting Party stated that their son had fired several shots into a wall inside the residence,” a RCSD news release stated. “The Reporting Party confronted their son, who immediately ran from the location with the firearm.”  Deputies conducted an extensive air and ground search for the suspect, now identified as Christian Stuart, but were unable to locate him.  During their investigation, authorities learned that the family dog had been grazed by a bullet during the shooting inside the residence. Five people were arrested on prostitution charges during an undercover operation in Pomona on Tuesday.The sting operation targeted sex purchasers and human trafficking in the area near East Holt Avenue and Indian Hill Boulevard, according to Pomona Police Department.During the operation, undercover officers posed as sex workers and were “contacted by sex purchasers” in the area, police said.Five people were taken into custody on alleged prostitution charges:-Timothy Macias, 34, from San Dimas-Mark Mendoza, 20, from Pomona-Juan Ramirezgonzalez, 40, from Rialto-Emmanoel Zakarian, 26, from Glendale-Micaelo Duran, 26, from Rowland HeightsThe operation was a joint effort by the Pomona Police Department Special Investigations Unit (SIU) and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department of Human Trafficking Team. 16 arrested in L.A.
