OAKLAND — Federal prosecutors have charged an East Bay man with allegedly acquiring $800,000 in schemes that targeted people searching for two of life’s greatest essentials: housing and love.Barnabas Jime was charged June 1 with a single count of wire fraud, which carries up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Authorities say the investigation started back in July 2022, when the victim of a romance scam reported sending funds to an Emeryville resident named Thomas Kirkpatrick, who apparently took the money and ran. When federal authorities looked into it, they reportedly discovered that not only did Kirkpatrick not exist, but that both his identity and a second name — Patrick Warren — were invented by Jime to perpetrate various fraud schemes. They found that Jime had used the same Emeryville address in a police report and a rental car agreement, and that both the Warren and Kirkpatrick personas used that address too, according to the criminal complaint....NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal set to perform night show for Outside Lands

An Oakland homicide detective promised a man strung out on drugs that he’d be “a little ATM for you” — all in exchange for the man falsely testifying at a 2013 murder trial, an investigator for the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office said in court Tuesday. The allegation came on the second day of a key evidentiary hearing for Phong Tran, 45, the Oakland police officer who is accused of numerous felonies, including two counts of perjury, as well as charges of bribery of a witness, attempted bribery of a witness and subornation of perjury under oath. A judge is expected to rule at the conclusion of the hearing whether enough evidence exists to send the case to trial. The claim raised the possibility — for the first time in open court — that Tran had made a habit of convincing people to falsely testify at murder trials, in order to obtain convictions on cases he investigated.Prior to this week’s hearing, prosecutors’ allegations had focused on th...Woman stabbed to death in Antioch identified
