From that point forward Mucciarone did not allow a hit.“Taunton is as good as advertised today was just not their day,” Franklin coach Zach Brown said. “Real competition is when you do something good, they do something good, and you have to respond. Today was one of those days.”The Panthers (15-0) did all the damage needed in the bottom of the second as they recorded six straight hits to start the frame. It had been 767 days since James Paxton’s last start in the majors.Back then, he had just returned to the Seattle Mariners after two seasons with the New York Yankees. On April 6, 2021, he made his season debut, threw 1.1 innings, and departed with left elbow discomfort.Since then, he’s had Tommy John surgery, signed a contract with the Red Sox, suffered a season-ending Grade 2 lat tear in his first rehab game last summer, and missed the first several weeks of the ongoing season. Finally, on the 768th day, he took the mound again during an 8-6 loss to the visiting St. Louis Cardinals. The veteran southpaw’s rehab games had been a very mixed bag, with far too many walks and earned runs, and after more than two years out of the game, expectations were low. That made it easy for him to clear the bar. Over five innings in his season debut (and Red Sox debut), Paxton held the St. Louis Cardinals to two earned runs on four hits, issued a walk, and struck out nine. His veloc...Privacy commissioner appeals Federal Court decision in Facebook case

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada is appealing a recent decision by the Federal Court, which sided with Facebook in a case tied to the Cambridge Analytica affair.A judge in April dismissed the federal privacy watchdog’s bid for a declaration that the social media giant, now known as Meta, broke the law governing the use of personal information. The application was brought by the watchdog in relation to its 2019 investigation of Facebook, conducted jointly with British Columbia’s privacy commissioner, which found shortcomings in its privacy practices. The investigation followed a complaint that British consulting firm Cambridge Analytica was able to access the private data of millions of Facebook users without their consent. Facebook disputed the findings and did not agree to implement any recommendations. The watchdog asked the Federal Court in 2020 to require Facebook to correct its privacy practices to conform with a law governing how the private sector can...Japan’s Kishida says G7 facing historic moment as finance leaders wrap up talks on global economy

RENO, Nev. (AP) — A private investigator who used GPS devices to secretly track the vehicles of Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve and a county commissioner ahead of the 2002 election asked the Nevada Supreme Court late Friday to overturn a judge’s order that he identify the client who hired him.Schieve filed suit in December seeking damages from private detective David McNeely for a violation of her privacy after a mechanic alerted her to the clandestine GPS tracking device.Sparks police determined it was purchased by McNeely and ex-Washoe County Commissioner Vaughn Hartung joined the suit in February under similar circumstances.Lawyers for McNeely said in Friday’s appeal to the state’s high court that divulging the name of a client who paid him to spy on the politicians would violate the long-accepted and expected confidentiality of a “private investigator-client relationship.”The attorneys said Washoe District Judge David Hardy had erroneously rejected McNeely’s a...Seattle to pay $2.3M to whistleblowers over ex-mayor Durkan’s 2020 deleted texts

SEATTLE (AP) — The city of Seattle will pay $2.3 million to settle a lawsuit brought by employees who helped reveal that thousands of then-Mayor Jenny Durkan’s text messages had been deleted in 2020 amid protests over George Floyd’s death at the hands of Minneapolis police. The terms of the city’s settlement with Stacy Irwin and Kimberly Ferreiro were finalized this week and released to The Seattle Times through a public disclosure request Friday, the newspaper reported. After their whistleblower complaint in 2021, further scrutiny showed that texts of other top officials also were not retained from that period in 2020 when police used tear gas against Black Lives Matter protest crowds and temporarily vacated a police precinct during weeks of demonstrations. Protesters also temporarily occupied a small area of the city known as the Capitol Hill Organized Protest zone. The $2.3 million payout is in addition to nearly $800,000 spent by the city to defend the case.Irwin and Ferreiro sai...Mother’s day weekend 21-degree cooler than a week ago; lots of clouds-only sporadic Saturday sprinkles—many rain-free hours; rains and cool “NE” winds increase Saturday night/Sunday
