ST. LOUIS – Labor Day is meant to recognize the hard work people do every day. But for some, Labor Day doesn’t mean a day off.Frontline health care workers routinely step up whenever duty calls. But now, nurses at SSM Saint Louis University Hospital are ready to strike if proper terms of work are not reached between the union and the hospital.Every day looks different inside the emergency room. But what happens when those who are taking care of you are the ones in need of help?“I got a call from my charge nurse saying, ‘Hey, is this patient stable? We have another trauma coming in.’ I was like, ‘This patient is not stable; you’ll need to find somebody else,’” said Hadas Becker, an ER staff nurse with almost eight years of experience.Emergency nurses are among those deciding whose life needs to be saved and by whom. Becker has been faced with that scenario on more than one occasion. Labor Day events continuing today across bi-state area “It’s full. It’s just full. JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The state's top educators want to curb bad behavior in the classroom by implementing social-emotional learning standards for all students. For the past few months, a group of teachers, school counselors, and mental health experts have been researching what would help improve student behavior in the classroom. The reason behind this study is to not only help with teacher recruitment and retention but also to have an effect on the business community."We're not advocating that everyone has to change their values to meet the same values," Missouri State Board of Education member Kim Bailey said. "We're advocating for basic human dignity."It's a plan to improve the current climate of education in the state. Back in December, the Board of Education asked the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) to form a working group to create social and emotional learning (SEL) standards starting in kindergarten through 12th grade."What we heard from teachers all ...Giant bounce park outside Galleria celebrates big opening weekend

The idea of playing more than 100 snaps in a football game sounds absurd. But Travis Hunter made it look easy during Colorado’s upset over No. 17 TCU on Saturday. The sophomore cornerback/wide receiver played 144 snaps (80 defense and 64 offense), making plays that had the entire nation, including Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain II — arguably a top two corner in the league — in disbelief.“The plays he (made were) crazy,” Surtain said. “You don’t see that often, him playing (144) snaps (and) making plays on both sides of the ball.”Hunter, who transferred to Colorado after playing for Deion Sanders at Jackson State last season, was an elite prospect out of high school. However, his performance against the Horned Frogs made it seem like he wasn’t from this planet. He caught 11 passes for 119 yards while diving for an interception. For Broncos cornerback Fabian Moreau, Saturday wasn’t his first time watching the Travis Hunter experience. OAKLAND – The Oakland A’s coaching staff and front office are using this time with just under four weeks left in the regular season to help determine which players can be a part of the solution going forward.First baseman Ryan Noda, second baseman Zack Gelof, and outfielder Lawrence Butler figure into the team’s long-term plans — and could even be key ingredients for whenever the A’s are again ready to compete for a playoff spot.Gelof was just named the American League Rookie of the Month for August and Noda has played his best baseball of the year since he returned from a fractured jaw midway through last month, helping the A’s put together a positive stretch in what’s otherwise been a forgettable 2023 season. Those two and Butler combined for five hits and three home runs in a 10-inning, 6-5 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays at the Coliseum on Monday.
