NEW YORK (AP) — A pivotal figure in the hush money payment investigation of Donald Trump returned on Monday to the building where a grand jury has been meeting for months, a repeat appearance suggesting his testimony could be key as prosecutors push toward potential criminal charges. There was still no word on when the panel might vote on a possible indictment of the former president.David Pecker, a longtime Trump friend and the former chief executive of the parent company of The National Enquirer, was back as the grand jury heard testimony in the probe for the first time since last Monday, when a witness favorable to the ex-president appeared. The grand jury is now back on the Trump matter, according to a person familiar with the case who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss secretive proceedings. The ex-president is being investigated over payments during his 2016 campaign to two women who alleged affairs or sexual encounters with him.Trump denies being involved with either o...Family of US couple kidnapped in Haiti pleads for release

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Nikese Toussaint was at church, so she didn’t see the text message from her sister. All she knew at that point was that their brother and his wife, who live in the U.S., had landed safely in Haiti to visit ailing relatives and prepare for Rara, a colorful and boisterous festival born out of the dark days of slavery. It wasn’t until Toussaint got home and her sister followed up the unread text with a phone call that she learned her warnings had materialized: their brother, an accountant; his wife, a social worker; and another person were snatched off a public bus amid a surge in gang-related kidnappings.Toussaint took a deep breath. Not again, she thought.Seventeen years earlier, gangs had kidnapped two of her cousins in the capital of Port-au-Prince. They were eventually released but remain traumatized. This time, the gang that kidnapped her brother, wife and another person is demanding $200,000 — each.“How are we ever going to come up with that money?” Tou...Arizona governor: scheduled execution is unlikely next week

PHOENIX (AP) — A vow by Arizona’s governor not to proceed with any executions amid lingering questions about the rights of death row prisoners appears to have paused a scheduled execution next week, even though it hasn’t officially been called off.Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs won a key battle recently when the Arizona Supreme Court concluded a state law didn’t require her to proceed with the planned April 6 execution of Aaron Gunches, even though his execution date wasn’t canceled. Hobbs has vowed no prisoners will be executed until there’s confidence that the state isn’t violating constitutional rights when enforcing the death penalty.Gunches was scheduled to receive a lethal injection for the 2002 killing of Ted Price, who was his girlfriend’s ex-husband. He had pleaded guilty to a murder charge in the shooting death near Mesa, Arizona.Price’s sister, Karen Price, had tried unsuccessfully to get the court to order Hobbs to carry out the execution. EDMONTON — Two police officers killed in the line of duty were honoured Monday at a regimental funeral with tears and tales of off-key crooning, birdies and beers, laughs and contagious joy.Thousands of officers gathered with family members to say a formal goodbye to Edmonton police Const. Travis Jordan, 35, and Const. Brett Ryan, 30, at Rogers Place arena, the home area of the Edmonton Oilers. “I’ll remember his smile, his wheezy laugh — we’ve been told we laugh the exact same way. I will always remember how excited he was when Brett found out he was going to be a dad, and I know that is one memory I will never lose,” Ryan’s pregnant widow, Ashley, said in her eulogy. “You will live on in baby Ryan and they will know every last detail about how special you were to so many people and, most importantly, to me. I love you forever. I’ll miss you always.”Jordan’s widow, Annie, stood silently beside police chaplain Roy Langer as he read her parting words. “We didn’t have one hard day in ...4 hospitalized, including child, after car crash in Auburn Gresham

Aaron Leming of Bear Report is featured in this edition of "9 Good Minutes" from WGN News Now. LAKE FOREST - One of the more critical Bears' offseasons in recent memory is well underway, and as expected, Ryan Poles has been quite busy. The general manager has already signed a number of free agents since he had plenty of room under the salary cap to do so to build a roster with a number of holes. On top of that, he's already traded the team's top overall pick in exchange for four selections and a No. 1 receiver. That's D.J. Moore, who some could argue is the biggest player addition of the still young Bears' 2023 offseason that comes after a 3-14 record.Defense has been a big part of the Bears' signings so far as they started things off by locking up starting linebackers T.J. Edwards (3-year, $19.5 million) and Tremaine Edmunds (4-year, $72 million). Defensive end DeMarcus Walker, linebacker Dylan Cole, and defensive tackle Andrew Billings are among the others joining a unit that was a...Most popular searches about Illinois

PARK CITY, Utah (KTVX) - As Day 5 of his ski crash case against Gwyneth Paltrow continued this morning, plaintiff Terry Sanderson took the stand to discuss his version of events and his physical and mental health since the incident.Sanderson is suing Paltrow over a 2016 skiing collision at a Utah ski resort. He's asking for more than $300,000, claiming Paltrow caused the crash, which he says lead to permanent brain damage that altered his personality. That's the opposite of what Paltrow testified last week. The 76-year-old retired optometrist's Monday testimony came just minutes after the court revealed that a viewer in the case was finally able to access an internet link believed to hold GoPro footage of the crash. While the jury was informed of the possible footage, and both the plaintiffs and the defense agreed the contents were "authentic," it has not been played for the jury or the public. Nor were any other contents behind the link made available. Gwyneth Paltrow testifies t...Latest news
