McCarthy ouster, death of Feinstein zaps California clout on Capitol Hill

The recent death of Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and this week’s ouster of Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) from the Speakership has deprived California of a wide swath of legislative and political clout, leaving the state looking to up-and-comers in Congress to fill big shoes. The loss of the two, coupled with Rep. Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) own exit from the Speakership late last year, has shaken up the state — and put it in an unfamiliar position. It has long relied on top members, especially Feinstein, to bring dollars and projects home; Feinstein served in the Senate from 1992 until her death last month.“She set a tremendous standard for what it means for a United States senator to represent California,” Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) told The Hill. “And to serve here in the Senate, I can only pray that I come anywhere close to live up to the standard that she set.” “It is impossible to overstate the impact she’s had on California,” Padilla also told reporters Wednesda...Lawmakers say they are working to get constituents out of Israel in wake of attack

Lawmakers are vowing to get their constituents out of Israel in the wake of the attacks launched by the militant group Hamas. In a surprise move, Palestinian militant group Hamas launched an attack on Israel on Saturday, which has now left at least 600 dead in Israel and another 300 dead in Gaza. Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) said Sunday that he is in touch with constituents who are currently in Israel amid the attacks.“Well, we have been in touch with dozens of constituents who are in Israel currently. Obviously, for their safety and security, I'm not going to get too specific. But we are working with them, as well as the consulate, to try and get them out as quickly as possible,” he said on CNN's “State of the Union.”“Given the situation on the ground, we want to make sure that all of our residents here in the 17th District get home as quickly as possible,” he added.Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.) also said that he has been notified by 53 of his own constituents on Sunday, saying that they...5th annual Porchfest DC in Southeast highlights community spirit

Sunday’s fall weather was the perfect way to kick off Porchfest DC’s Southeast edition, with the annual event celebrating its fifth year in the District’s Hillcrest community.Nia Mobley, co-executive director of Porchfest, calls the event fun and entertaining for everyone from “grandparents to toddlers.”Live music played on the front lawns of residential houses lining the street, local artist vendors painted, people jumped rope, and DJ speakers blasted Go-Go music.Longtime Southeast resident John Murphy donned a sweatshirt purchased from a local vendor with the word “Southeast” printed across the front. He said the people at Porchfest are “really engaging.”“Whether you know someone or not, someone will just stop and start chatting with you,” Murphy said. “That’s the kind of energy you get around here.”“We really want the neighbors to get to know each other,” Mobley said. “It builds community.”The free event is intende...Quigley recovers from double bogey to win on PGA Tour Champions

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Brett Quigley had to work a lot harder than he imagined Sunday to win again on the PGA Tour Champions. He recovered from a shocking double bogey with four closing pars for a 1-under 71 and a one-shot victory in the Constellation Furyk & Friends. The stress from that double bogey on the par-3 14th at Timuquana followed him all the way to the 18th hole, where Quigley had to make a sharp-breaking 7-foot par putt to avoid a playoff with Steven Alker.“I was scrambling the whole way in,” Quigley said.He won his first PGA Tour Champions title more than three years ago in Morocco — in his second start on the 50-and-older circuit. He had to wait 79 starts for the next victory. FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Alvin Kamara told the Saints coaching staff he wanted to touch the football more this week. They gave him what he wanted, and the running back provided the spark New Orleans’ dormant offense had been missing. Kamara rushed for a touchdown to become the Saints’ career TD leader, Derek Carr had two scoring passes and New Orleans routed the New England Patriots 34-0 on Sunday.Tyrann Mathieu added a 27-yard interception return for a touchdown to help New Orleans (3-2) chase Patriots quarterback Mac Jones from the game — the second straight week coach Bill Belichick sidelined Jones in the second half. Kamara said he expected “tough conversations” in the locker room following a 26-9 loss to Tampa Bay last week. The response was exactly what he hoped it would be.“Anytime you find yourself in a lull or rut … you’ve got to find a way to fix it fast,” Kamara said. “Sometimes you get those ruts and it compounds and it starts to just turn into your identity....Young and Plum each score 26 points as Aces dominate Liberty 99-82 in WNBA Finals opener
