OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) – Oakland’s mayor recommitted herself to tackling the city’s ever-increasing crime problem on Tuesday. During her State of the City address, Mayor Sheng Thao said nothing is more important to her than the safety of Oakland’s residents. “Everyone in Oakland wants to be safe,” she said. “Wherever you live, whoever you are, you have a right to feel safe in the City of Oakland… I am committed to holding myself and the city departments accountable for taking necessary action. Oakland was one national model for reducing gun violence, achieving a 50% decrease between 2012 and 2019. (KRON) -- A suspected DUI driver was arrested after he crashed his car into a family's home in Mountain View at 3 a.m. Tuesday, police said. The driver was treated at a hospital before he was booked into jail on suspicion of driving under the influence. Dispatchers received a 911 call at 3:08 a.m. reporting that a car crashed into a multi-family residence on California Street. Firefighters evacuated residents while 1,000 gallons of water gushed out of the damaged building's water pipes. The alleged DUI driver was traveling at a high rate of speed when his car crashed, according to the Mountain View Fire Department. "A vehicle had crashed into the building at an estimated high rate of speed, causing significant structural damage and into the complex’s water supply, resulting in a copious amount of water being discharged," MVFD wrote. SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- People who own homes in San Francisco -- and don't actually live in them -- will be slapped with a new tax in 2025. The San Francisco Board of Supervisors unanimously passed a vacant home tax law on Tuesday. Owners of vacant homes will have to file and pay the tax starting April 30, 2025, Supervisor Dean Preston said.The law will tax owners of buildings of three units or more, where a residential unit has been vacant for more than six months in a given year. The tax rate is higher for larger units, and it increases the longer a home is kept vacant. It is scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2024, with the first filing deadline set for April 30, 2025.Preston said, "We are now taking the next steps toward providing clarity for property owners and guidance for how the tax will be collected."The law was spurred in response to sky-high housing costs, and homeowners who live elsewhere.A Victorian home in San Francisco is seen on Jan. 14, 2022. MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay (AP) — Neymar was in tears as he left the field with an apparent knee injury at the end of the first half of Brazil’s World Cup qualifying match at Uruguay on Tuesday.The 31-year-old striker tripped and fell during a run in the 44th minute at the Centenario Staidum and was immediately surrounded by players from both teams as he held his left knee.Neymar was carried off on a stretcher with both of his hands on his face.
