A psychedelic high seems unlike any other. Though psychedelic drugs often have hallucinogenic properties, not everyone who trips on psychedelics has frightening or enlightening “visuals” to tell — and not everyone will feel as though they’re miraculously handed a “greater” purpose in life, either. These may be the commonly-told effects of psychedelic drugs, but it doesn’t seem like it’s always the case for everyone. Here are questions you might find yourself asking when it comes to psychedelics:Which drugs can give me a psychedelic high?Hallucinogens have been around since ancient times. The earliest recorded psychedelic use was discovered in a cave in Algeria; the cave had a mural of what experts call the “mushroom man” or the “mushroom shaman” — a painting of a bee-headed man with several mushrooms sprouting out of his body. This mural is believed to be 7,000 to 9,000 years old. There are also other discoveries — where evidence of psychedelic drugs was used — in other caves and ston...Wendy Marcus Pronounced Dead in Two-Vehicle Crash on Highway 101 [Humboldt County, CA]

As Women’s History Month nears closure, we reiterate our commitment to highlight the contributions of women year round in all creative industries (and beyond) at LA Weekly. We are still appreciative of the attention we get and give in March, though. Our sister publication The Village Voice, published this wonderful piece about the impactful work of women in the early eras of television. Enjoy.– Lina Lecaro (Culture & Entertainment Editor) “If television didn’t already exist, women would have had to invent it.” As I remember it, these words were spoken by the Village Voice’s own Andrew Sarris, in a Columbia University classroom, circa 2007. I was a 20-something TV buff masquerading as a cinephile, living in New York off dormitory food and the Wilder movies Sarris screened in class. (I was raised in the church of Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart, courtesy of my parents and their extensive VHS collection — not the same denomination, exactly, but the same religion.)I c...Nashville police release bodycam footage of police shooting school attacker

The Metro Nashville Police Department released body-camera footage Tuesday from the two officers who rushed into the Covenant School on Monday and fatally shot the mass shooter. The footage is from the body-worn cameras of officers Rex Engelbert and Michael Collazo, who police said fatally shot the attacker on Monday at 10:27 a.m. The videos show the officers entered the school amid wailing fire alarms and immediately went into several rooms to look for the suspect. They heard gunfire on the second floor and so hustled up the stairs as the bangs grew louder, the video shows. The officers approached the sound of gunfire and Engelbert, armed with an assault-style rifle, rounded a corner and fired multiple times at a person near a large window, who dropped to the ground, the video shows.Collazo then pushed forward and appeared to shoot the person on the ground four times with a handgun, yelling “Stop moving!” The officers finally approached the person, moved a gun away and th...Searching for lessons and looking ahead after Pac-12 WBB’s disappointing NCAA Tournament

What will the Pac-12 learn from a postseason that did not unfold as planned? The conference sent seven teams into the NCAA Tournament, four were eliminated by lower seeds and nobody advanced past the Sweet 16.No. 1 Stanford didn’t escape the second round; No. 5 Washington State lost to a No. 12 (Florida Gulf Coast); No. 8 USC was bounced by South Dakota State. This is the first tournament since 2015 that the Pac-12 wasn’t represented in the Elite Eight. What are the lessons?Clearly, it needs more size and must become more physical. And the guards require more seasoning to handle NCAA Tournament-level pressure. All seven tournament teams return enough talent to contend for the field of 68 again next season. The Arizona, Stanford and USC recruiting classes are ranked among the top 10 nationally by ESPN, with Washington and Oregon also in the top 20.What changes will the transfer portal bring? There are several significant names in the portal already, including Arizona’s Lauren...This ‘Schitt’s Creek’ writer has a new small-town series. Here’s ‘The Big Door Prize’

The small town of Deerfield is a comfortably ordinary place until a mysterious machine called the Blue Morpho arrives. In exchange for a few quarters – and providing one’s Social Security number and fingerprints – the machine promises to reveal a person’s life potential. Soon the town is in a tizzy as people learn what their future could, or should, hold – a person might be a magician, storyteller, hero, liar or royalty. In some cases, this information, which is dispensed by the machine onto a card, can rapidly upend a person’s entire life. That’s the starting point for “The Big Door Prize,” a new comedy series based on M. O. Walsh’s book of the same name. Premiering on Apple TV+ on March 29, the show follows Dusty Hubbard (Chris O’Dowd), a local teacher, his extended family and neighbors. Each episode dives deeper into the story of a new character, like Jacob (Sammy Fourlas), a high school student whose twin brother – the local superstar athlete – recently died, or Father Reuben (D...49ers’ Kyle Shanahan eager to see Trey Lance, Sam Darnold as Brock Purdy recovers

Kyle Shanahan accepts the fact the 49ers could be without Brock Purdy into October as the regular season starts without him.Or perhaps Purdy races back to full health by training camp, which is the hope general manager John Lynch expressed Monday.Regardless of either scenario, the task at hand is to prepare Trey Lance for the starting quarterback role he held a year ago, even if Purdy showed enough last season to reclaim the job once his surgically repaired elbow allows.“With Brock being hurt, it does open (the job) up, and it does give him a chance,” Shanahan said Tuesday at the NFL owners meeting in Phoenix. “I don’t know how Brock’s going to come back. I don’t know exactly when he’s going to come back, so I don’t have the exact answer for that.“But right now because he is hurt, it is nice to focus on Trey, it is nice to focus on Sam (Darnold), and see how they do in OTAs and most likely see how they’re playing leading us into training camp, because I think...Latest news
