HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii’s second-largest volcano is likely to resume erupting soon after a brief pause. The U.S. Geological Survey said Saturday that a shallow earthquake storm had been detected under the summit of Kilauea. That signals that “resumption of eruptive activity at Kilauea summit is likely imminent,” the USGS said.Scientists just said Tuesday that lava had stopped flowing after 61 days of volcanic activity, but Kilauea is living up to its reputation as one of the world’s most active volcanoes. It also erupted from September 2021 to last December. A 2018 Kilauea eruption destroyed more than 700 residences. For about two weeks last December, Hawaii’s biggest volcano, Mauna Loa, was also erupting on Hawaii’s Big Island. The dual eruptions of Hawaii’s biggest volcanos provided a temporary boost to tourism during the slow season.Volcanic eruptions have deep spiritual and cultural significance for Native Hawaiians. Napoli moves 18 points clear atop Serie A; Lazio held

Published Sun, 23 Feb 2025 03:00:24 GMT

MILAN (AP) — The comparisons with Diego Maradona keep coming for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. And, just like the Argentina great, Kvaratskhelia appears to be leading Napoli to the Serie A title. There were, indeed, echoes of Maradona in Kvaratskhelia’s opening goal in a 2-0 win over Atalanta which sent Napoli 18 points clear at the top of Serie A.Kvaratskhelia lived up to his “Kvaradona” nickname when he bedazzled the Atalanta defense on the hour mark. He collected the ball from Victor Osimhen, weaved his way into the area, twisting and turning between defenders, and blasted into the roof of the net.“Kvara displayed the fabulous quality he has. He scored a goal worthy of Maradona today,” Napoli coach Luciano Spalletti said. “He’s just phenomenal one on one. “The way he sways past opponents it’s impossible to tell which way he’ll go, then he shoots with precision and power. This time you can bring up the best ever player.”Maradona led Napoli to its only two Italian league titles in 1987 and...

Wu weighs in as speed restrictions remain on some MBTA lines amid inspections

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu says she sympathizes with MBTA riders who have been inconvenience by recent slow-downs as a result of safety inspections and is confident Gov. Maura Healey will appoint the right general manager to address the issues.“It’s just like one thing after another for all commuters,” Wu said Saturday. “I know what it feels like when you get to the T station and immediately you begin to feel your body tensing up because you’re like, OK, what’s the sign going to say today? Is there going to be a delay? Is it going to be 20 minutes to the next train?” Wu said she is confident that Healey will make a solid pick for MBTA GM, a decision Healey says is due to be announced in the coming days.“We need to make sure that leadership is able to hit the ground running, is able to hit the ground running … I know the governor and her team are taking the time they need to make the right decision here.” Wu’s comments c...

BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Bruins’ T-shirt factory is struggling to keep up with all the milestones the team is cruising past on its way to the Presidents’ Trophy.“Fifty wins, it’s amazing,” said forward A.J. But we’re not really focused on anything right now besides playing the right way for 60 minutes every night.”Hathaway gathered in a rebound and poked it in to break a third-period tie as Boston rallied from a two-goal deficit to beat Detroit and improve to 50-9-5 on the season. Julius Randle’s meltdown leads to third straight Knicks defeat, goes 5-for-24 in loss to Clippers

Published Sun, 23 Feb 2025 03:00:24 GMT

Julius Randle lost his cool.It was a flashback to last season, when Jalen Brunson wasn’t around and Randle’s quick-triggered anger contributed to an ugly and spiraling season. But Randle seemed to get that under control as he re-emerged as a 2023 All-Star.Until Saturday in Los Angeles.Randle picked up a technical foul at the end of the third quarter for clobbering the Clippers’ Mason Plumlee in the chest with an elbow. After the whistle, Randle went after the referees and appeared upset with a Knicks security guard near the team bench. It was an ugly scene and impossible not to correlate with Randle’s terrible basketball performance. With Brunson injured and in street clothes, Randle missed 19 of his 24 shots as the Knicks lost their third straight Saturday, 106-95, falling from fourth to fifth in the Eastern Conference behind the Brooklyn Nets.Randle’s meltdown was a critical point. The three free throws (two from Plumlee for the foul, one from Kawhi Le...
