ST. LOUIS – KTVI is celebrating its 70th birthday as a television station. We began broadcasting on Aug. 10, 1953, as WTVI Channel 54. Two years later, we became KTVI. There was no Facebook in those days, but as we celebrated our 70th birthday as a station, we took to social media to ask our viewers to share their favorite on-air moments. As the late, great Dick Ford noted, it’s the people who make this place. And those people are responsible for some of your favorite memories.Viewer Alyssa commented: “growing up with FOX 2 and all things Tim Ezell.”From bears to breaking his nose on air, Tim’s definitely done it all and risked it all to make your mornings brighter.Dennis remembered the time Paul Schankman experienced a moment we’re sure he’d like to forget. We’ll certainly never look at llamas the same way again.Behind-the-scenes bloopers reveal a different side of our staff. Peter picked out Elliot Davis. His now iconic “You Paid for It” point and decades of pinpointing government ...

'Oppenheimer' stirs interest in St. Louis' involvement in Manhattan Project

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 19:09:00 GMT

ST. LOUIS – The film "Oppenheimer" is generating a lot of interest in the Manhattan Project and St. Louis' involvement in the development of the atomic bomb. This comes just one day after the 78th anniversary of the bombing of Nagasaki, Japan, signaling the end of World War II. A scientific and military breakthrough that wouldn’t have been possible without the St. Louis region."That kind of finely tuned nuclear work isn't possible unless you have a chemically pure sample to begin with, and that's what Mallinckrodt provided," Dr. Gwendolyn Verhoff said.Verhoff teaches history in St. Louis and wrote her dissertation on the history of refining uranium and Mallinckrodt's work."Mallinckrodt committed his Mallinckrodt Chemical Works to developing a process to bring that product start to finish and put it in government hands in a scaled-up way that would actually have it be arriving in a way that would be suitable for a mass production wartime effort," Verhoff said. Rockies lose to Dodgers, 2-1, as Daniel Bard walks in game-winning run

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 19:09:00 GMT

The Rockies’ margin for error is always razor thin. When they face the mighty Dodgers, it’s pretty much nonexistent.Exhibit A: an excruciating 2-1 loss to the Dodgers on Thursday night in Los Angeles.Reliever Daniel Bard, who’s struggled with walks much of the season, issued a bases-loaded walk to Max Muncy in the eighth inning to force in the go-ahead run.L.A.’s game-turning rally began when reliever Tommy Doyle issued an ill-advised leadoff walk to pinch-hitter David Peralta and then gave up a one-out single to Mookie Betts.Manager Bud Black turned to Bard, who promptly walked the dangerous Freddie Freeman to fill the bases. When shortstop Ezequiel Tovar made a sensational, over-the-shoulder catch in shallow left field to rob pinch-hitter Will Smith of a base hit, it looked as if the Rockies would escape. But Bard walked Muncy on five pitches.Entering the night, it was a foregone conclusion that a left-handed starter would dominate Thursday night’s ga...

A man and a woman from Romania were arrested in Riverside County earlier this week for a distraction theft and investigators believe the suspects may have been involved in other similar robberies.  On Aug. 7, Riverside County deputies assigned to Eastvale’s Special Enforcement Team responded to the parking lot of a business located in the 5000 block Hamber Avenue on reports of the robbery, according to a RCSD news release. At the scene, deputies learned that an elderly victim had been lured into a conversation by the suspects, later identified as 27-year-old Petre Alexandru and 22-year-old Gratiela Stoian.  “During the interaction, the suspects distracted the victim and robbed him of jewelry he was wearing. The suspects fled the scene in a vehicle,” the release noted.  Investigators were able to identify the suspects’ vehicle and also learned that the couple was responsible for a similar theft in Vancouver, Canada.  Petre Alexandru, 27, and Gratiela Stoian, 22, seen h...

The pandemic was over, but nearly 2 million California students were still chronically absent. Why?

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 19:09:00 GMT

Skyline High School is tucked away in the Oakland hills, and physically getting students to the school has long been a challenge. But today — three years since the onset of the pandemic — the problem with attendance has gotten more complex.“We spent 12 years getting kids ready … (for working) a nine-to-five day, basically,” said Eric Shapiro, Skyline’s community schools manager, describing the pre-COVID pattern. “But you break people out of that, and you’re seeing it with adults too — we’re having such a hard time going back to work and adjusting to that whole mode.”Skyline is far from an outlier. A new analysis has found that one in four students across the country were chronically absent from school, defined as missing at least 10% — or 18 days or more — when California children returned to in-person classes for the 2021-22 academic year. That’s according to Stanford University professor Thomas Dee and The Associated Press, which dug into ...
