One person was killed and five people were taken to the hospital after a large fire broke out in a rooming house on Acushnet Avenue in New Bedford Tuesday. New Bedford Fire Chief Scott Kruger said crews responded to the fire after receiving reports around 3:15 p.m. Hours later, crews remained on scene around 6:30 p.m., battling flames from outside the building after officials said a roof collapse rendered the building structurally unsafe shortly after they arrived.“Once you lose the roof, it makes all the walls more unstable, especially the top floor,” Kruger said. SKY7 was over the area earlier Tuesday afternoon, when video showed flames shooting from the windows of the building. Heavy smoke was also visible. Firefighters could be seen working to get flames under control, using ladders and what appeared to be a drone to survey the scene.Witnesses said they saw some people jump from the four-story structure. Something special about that spring sunshine and when it goes away, even for a day, is such a buzzkill. Thankfully, the sun is set to return for the next couple of days! Check out the weather map for Wednesday…High Pressure FTW! Now, with that High pressure close by it means a few things…mostly sunny skies…..light winds…and the likelihood of a sea breeze to engage during the afternoon hours. A chilly start to the day with temps bouncing up close to 50 by lunchtime but during the afternoon is when we’ll see the sea breeze do its seabreezy things…Overall, a great early spring day. Now, take a second look at that weather map. Notice the cold front on the left side of the image. That’s sadly a late season arctic front that will usher in much colder temps for Thursday…as seen here on the 3-day forecast:A cold, gusty breeze will be huffing & puffing for the morning and early afternoon hours making it feel even colder. thankfully, these l...Fenway Park ready to open for the 2023 season Thursday

A new kind of family fun will be on display at Fenway Park after the gates open for Opening Day on Thursday.Fans will get to test their pitch speed in a pitching cage while solving a giant Rubik’s Cube portrait and comparing their height to that of Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers and newcomer Masataka Yoshida, among other players. The biggest new fan-facing amenity this season will be the enhanced kids concourse in right field inside Gate B, Red Sox President and CEO Sam Kennedy said Tuesday after he and other team officials showed off ballpark improvements to Mayor Michelle Wu.“For our younger fans who are coming out, to come to Fenway, to enjoy a baseball game and to get into the game yourself, that’s huge,” Kennedy said. “It creates buzz, energy, life in the ballpark when we have younger fans here.”Kennedy added $9 tickets for students are still available for games in April and May as the sellout environment that Fenway grew accustomed to in the early 2000s and 2010s is no lon...Neck injury sidelines Heat’s Jimmy Butler vs. Raptors; Kyle Lowry still on minutes restriction

A muddled Miami Heat injury outlook took another turn into the unknown when Jimmy Butler was ruled out at midday for Tuesday night’s game against the Toronto Raptors due to what the team listed as neck soreness.Butler was not at the Heat’s morning shootaround at Scotiabank Arena, apparently after a restless night of sleep following the Heat’s Monday arrival to Toronto. While Butler had missed 15 previous games this season, mostly due to a sore right knee and related injury management, Tuesday marks his first absence since he missed the Heat’s Jan. 24 home victory over the Boston Celtics due to back tightness. He then had appeared in 26 games before this latest setback, including both ends of the Heat’s most recent back-to-back sets.Tuesday’s absence comes with the Heat in the midst of a back-to-back road set that concludes with a Wednesday night game against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden. An injury report for that game will be issued...More than $30K raised for victims of Scituate fire

More than $30,000 has been raised for some of the residents who lost “everything” during a devastating five-alarm fire along Minot Beach in Scituate. The massive blaze that burnt four seaside homes to the ground and destroyed another on Glades Road last week has led to a strong outpouring of community support, with two GoFundMe pages totaling just over $36,500.One of the efforts has raised more than $26,000 for Lesley Stroud, who had been inside her apartment when the fire broke out around 8 p.m. Friday. Her boyfriend noticed flames coming from a neighbor’s home, called 911 and got Lesley out right away, according to Laura Marinak, who organized the fundraiser for her “dear friend.”Marinak described the apartment as Stroud’s “little slice of heaven — the place she had always dreamed of living, and worth the hour-long commute to her job as a kindergarten teacher.”“We are eternally grateful that Lesley and the other victims were not injured in this tragic event,” Marinak wrote, “and f...Police: Nashville shooter fired indiscriminately at victims

By JONATHAN MATTISE (Associated Press)NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The shooter who killed three students and three staff members at a Christian school in Nashville legally bought seven weapons in recent years and hid the guns from their parents before carrying out the attack by firing indiscriminately at victims and spraying gunfire through doors and windows, police said Tuesday. The violence Monday at The Covenant School was the latest school shooting to roil the nation and was planned carefully. The shooter had drawn a detailed map of the school, including potential entry points, and conducted surveillance of the building before carrying out the massacre, authorities said. The suspect, Audrey Hale, 28, was a former student at the school. Hale did not target specific victims — among them three 9-year-olds and the head of the school — but did target “this school, this church building,” police spokesperson Don Aaron said at a news conference Tuesday.Hale was un...Boston police search for ‘possible armed suspect’ in Charlestown near Tobin Bridge after car crash

The City Council’s dirty laundry is back flapping in the wind, this time in federal court, as a multi-day hearing kicked off over whether a judge should step in and scrap Boston’s new redistricting map.City Councilor Michael Flaherty on Tuesday spent around three hours on the stand as a witness for the plaintiffs — who are technically suing him in the case of Walters et al v the Boston City Council in an effort to scuttle the map the body passed in November.“Basically all the rules were out the door,” said Flaherty, describing the stretch run of the redistricting process. The redistricting cycle that will never die continues, for now, in the arguments in this case.Basically, the plaintiffs — a handful of people who live in the districts around which the two sides are at odds — are arguing that in the deliberations, the council focused on racial makeups in the South Boston, Dorchester and Mattapan districts in a way that was inappropriate. They also say there were some procedura...Latest news
