As much as the sacks and the laurels, Terrell Suggs remembers the frustration, the times when he felt less self-assured than he seemed on the surface, the older co-workers who lent helping hands. From the long view, Suggs’ career was seamless: No. 10 pick after he set a single-season NCAA sack record at Arizona State, NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year at age 21, NFL Defensive Player of the Year at 29, Super Bowl champion at 30, Ravens institution by the time he played his 16th and final season in Baltimore. At halftime of Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions, Suggs will become the 12th Ravens player inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor.Put his first year as a Raven under the microscope, however, and the story is both messier and more interesting.“Yeah, you’re gonna get frustrated,” he said of his NFL beginning. “In college, you’re used to knowing everything you’re supposed to do, but when you get up there, you’re not top ...Thursday’s high school roundup/scores: Bishop Stang golfers capture CCL crown

Something will give on Saturday when the team with the state’s longest winning streak squares off against a team which hasn’t lost against in-state competition since 2019.Defending Div. 1 state champion St. John’s Prep (6-0) has won 13 straight game since a 28-17 loss last Oct. 15 to the team it will host this weekend, Catholic Memorial (4-1). The last Massachusetts team to knock off the Knights were the Eagles (21-14) in the 2019 Div. 1 state championship game. There may be no love lost between the programs, but the level of respect they have for one another is off the chart. St. John’s Prep coach Brian St. Pierre and his Catholic Memorial counterpart, John DiBiaso, know this is going to be a gridiron battle.“They’re so talented on both sides of the ball as well as special teams,” St. Pierre said. “They’re tremendous up front and so well coached. Justin Tucker had made field goals to win the AFC championship game and give the Ravens a cushion in the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl. He was the most accurate kicker in NFL history, already talked about as the rare specialist worthy of selection to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.He didn’t need a signature moment, but he had a chance to create one as he lined up to kick a 66-yard field goal at Detroit’s Ford Field on the afternoon of Sept. 26, 2021.The Ravens will play the Lions again Sunday. The last time they did, Tucker put his stamp on football history. His field goal set a record and handed the Ravens a victory. More than that, it gave the New York Times Magazine and “60 Minutes” a hook as they lined up to profile Tucker, proclaiming him the greatest ever at his unusual trade.“Look, I’d be lying to you if I said I didn’t put a lot of value on that particular kick,” Tucker said Thursday. “It was a special moment for all of ...Christine Sinclair hints at retirement in short video post on social media

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — U.N. funding cuts to refugees living in Rwanda is threatening the right to education for children in more than 100,000 households who have fled conflict from different East African countries to live in five camps.A Burundian refugee, Epimaque Nzohoraho, told The Associated Press on Thursday how his son’s boarding school administrator told him his son “should not bother coming back to school,” because UNHCR had stopped paying his fees.Nzohoraho doesn’t know how much the U.N. refugee agency had been paying, because funds were directly paid to the school, but he had “hoped education would save his son’s future.”Last weekend, UNHCR announced funding cuts to food, education, shelter and health care as hopes to meet the $90.5 million in funding requirements diminished.UNHCR spokesperson Lilly Carlisle said that only $33 million had been received by October, adding that “the agency cannot manage to meet the needs of the refugees.”Rwanda hosts 134,519 refugees — ...Protesters march to US Embassy in Indonesia over Israeli airstrikes

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Protesters marched from several mosques to the heavily guarded U.S. Embassy in Indonesia’s capital Friday to denounce the staunch American support for Israel and demand an end to Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip.Similar protests also took place in front of the United Nations mission, a few kilometers (miles) from the embassy, and in the compound of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Authorities estimated that about 1,000 people participated in the rallies across Jakarta following Friday prayers in the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation.A brutal incursion into southern Israel by Hamas fighters on Oct. 7 provoked Israel to declare war against the militant group that rules Gaza. The Israeli siege of and airstrikes on the Palestinian territory were the focus earlier this week of demonstrations at Egyptian universities, inside a congressional office building in Washington, outside the Israeli Embassy in Bogota and near the U.S. Embas...Australia decides against canceling Chinese company’s lease of strategically important port

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — The Australian government announced Friday it has decided not to cancel a Chinese company’s 99-year lease on strategically important Darwin Port despite U.S. concerns that the foreign control could be used to spy on its military forces. The Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet said it decided after an investigation of the eight-year-old lease that current monitoring and regulation measures are sufficient to manage security risks for critical infrastructure such as the port in the northern garrison city of Darwin.“Australians can have confidence that their safety will not be compromised while ensuring that Australia remains a competitive destination for foreign investment,” it said in a statement.Landbridge Industry Australia, a subsidiary of Rizhao-based Shandong Landbridge Group, signed the lease with the debt-laden Northern Territory government in 2015. That was three years after U.S. Marines began annual rotations through Darwin as part of the U.S. p...Latest news
