Tre Jones was happy to get another trip to Minnesota added to the schedule, even if it was a bit last minute. When the Spurs and Timberwolves both failed to advance out of group stage in the In-Season Tournament, San Antonio was given an added game at Target Center as one of its fill-in contests, meaning the Apple Valley point guard was granted another chance to play at home.“All the family is in town for the most part. It’s always good to get back to Minnesota, especially around the holidays,” Jones said Wednesday. “We don’t really get a cold winter down there. So to be able to get some weather like this around Christmas, it’s always fun.”Jones returns to Minnesota playing in a different role than the one he occupied a year ago. Jones started 65 of the 68 games in which he played last season. Now he’s coming off the bench as part of Spurs coach Gregg Popovich’s grand experiment to throw point guards to the wayside. The coach tabbed second-year wing Jeremy Sochan to bring the ball up...Other voices: Sandra Day O’Connor was a trailblazer and far more than ‘a good judge’

CHICAGO — News that Sandra Day O’Connor, the Supreme Court’s first woman justice, had died Friday at age 93 brought back fond memories in these offices of her gracious — and well-attended — visit 10 years ago to our Editorial Board.Although retired since 2006, she politely disappointed us by holding to the high court’s practice of refusing to comment on decisions made during her time there or after.“I’m an old lady with a short memory,” she said. That self-deprecating crack took on new poignancy in 2018 when she announced that she’d been diagnosed with “the beginning stages of dementia, probably Alzheimer’s disease.” Her husband John O’Connor had died of complications of Alzheimer’s in 2009.Yet, she showed no difficulty in remembering the frustrations of life decades ago when she was trying to get started as a lawyer. Colorado’s Supreme Court justices turned their skeptical eyes toward the case to keep former President Donald Trump off the state’s 2024 ballot Wednesday as they heard arguments over the Republican frontrunner’s actions on Jan. 6, 2021 — and whether they disqualified him from running again. The seven justices peppered both the plaintiffs in the high-profile lawsuit and Trump’s legal team with questions, including if the siege of the U.S. Capitol by Trump’s supporters constituted an insurrection. They also probed the legal ability of the Colorado secretary of state to keep candidates off the ballot, the language of the 14th Amendment itself — which says insurrectionists can’t run for office — as well as whether Colorado can invoke that rule on its own.The provision at issue in the Civil War-era 14th Amendment was aimed at keeping Confederates away from federal power after the nation reunited. But its language doesn’t explicit...Santa Barbara man arrested for punching stroller-pushing grandfather in Calabasas

With a 59% decrease in the overall crime rate over the last 28 years, according to a recent report, Ventura County has been named the safest large county in all of California. The 2023 State of the Region Report, which used data compiled by the California Department of Justice, measured crimes reported per 1,000 residents in the state’s 16 largest counties along with the crime rate over time. Crimes in the report were divided into two categories, violent crimes such as homicide, rape, assault and robbery, and property crimes such as theft, burglary and arson. The nearly 60% decrease in the overall crime rate occurred between 1994 and 2022, but the report also noted that the 2022 crime rate in Ventura County was the lowest in the county’s modern history.
