THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — A fire that had been raging on board a cargo ship carrying thousands of new cars appears to have burnt itself out after nearly a week, the Dutch ministry coordinating salvage efforts said Tuesday. The Fremantle Highway, carrying 3,783 new vehicles, including 498 electric ones, from the German port city of Bremerhaven to Singapore had been ablaze since late on July 25. Firefighters decided not to douse the flames with water for fear of making the nearly 200-meter (around 650-foot) ship unstable as it floated close to North Sea shipping lanes and a world-renowned migratory bird habitat.“The situation on board the cargo ship is still stable. There are no indications that the fire is still burning,” the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management said, adding that the ship is intact below the waterline.Photos released Monday by the Netherlands coast guard appeared to show no smoke billowing out of the ship, which is anchored 16 kilomete...Lauren James scores twice as England routs China 6-1 at the Women’s World Cup

As ocean temperatures rise due to severe heat waves, a serious risk is affecting coral reefs. On Tuesday, a group of scientists from the University of Miami (UM) is hoping to tackle the situation as they gathered in Key Biscayne. Coral reefs, a vital part of our ocean’s ecosystem, are suffering in this heat just as much, if not more than humans are. The heat is causing the coral reefs to be bleached which means they are under more stress and are subject to mortality. Even in some of the most resilient reefs, temperature readings have gone up to 110 degrees Fahrenheit. “We had a huge effort over the last couple of decades here in Florida and elsewhere around the world to create coral nurseries and to establish protocols for out planting to restore the reefs,” said Dr. Cynthia Lewis, director of the Florida Keys Marine Laboratory. UM’s Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science plans on rescuing the coral to further help them at their facility off Vi...‘It’s incredible’: Survivor of Stow plane crash speaks while recovering at hospital

Sweden’s prime minister is considering tightening border controls over security concerns after recent Quran-burning controversies.“As everyone knows, we have a complicated security situation both in and around Sweden,” Prime Minster Ulf Kristersson said during a press conference Tuesday. “We are in daily contact with the Swedish intelligence services at the moment. That’s how serious we think the situation is.” A final decision on border control will be made Thursday, Swedish broadcaster SVT reported.“People with very weak links to Sweden should not be able to come to Sweden to commit crimes,” Kristersson added during that press conference. In recent weeks, Sweden and Denmark have witnessed several Quran burnings often led by far-right protesters, which were condemned by the EU. Denmark has “received considerable negative attention” from militant Islamists in response, the Danish Intelligence Service reported Monday. The incidents...Latest news
