Canada’s grocery sector needs more competition to help keep food prices down and encourage new entrants, the country’s competition watchdog has found.In a highly anticipated study released Tuesday, the Competition Bureau said concentration in the grocery industry has increased in recent years and the largest grocers have grown the amount they make on food sales. Most Canadians buy groceries in stores owned by a handful of grocery giants, with Canada’s three largest grocers — Loblaws, Sobeys, and Metro — collectively reporting more than $100 billion in sales and $3.6 billion in profits last year, the study found. “We saw Canada’s largest grocers’ food gross margins generally increase by a modest yet meaningful amount over the last five years,” it said. “This longer-term trend pre-dates the supply chain disruptions faced during the pandemic and the current inflationary period.”The Competition Bureau said this signals the need for more competition in...APD: SWAT called out to southwest Austin apartment, neighbors evacuated

AUSTIN (KXAN) – Austin Police said Tuesday morning the SWAT team was called to the 8600 block of West Gate Boulevard. The block is on West Gate just north of Davis Lane. Austin Police officer Alexandra Parker said multiple people called 911 at 4 a.m.When officers arrived to the location approximately 10 minutes later, officer Parker said officers were able to make contact with the victim of a domestic dispute and "get her to safety."Officers said a man refused to surrender and was making violent threats."For the safety of everyone, neighboring apartments were evacuated," according to Officer Parker.SWAT and negotiators were called to the scene."With the expertise of all patrol officers and specialized units on scene, I am confident they will do everything possible to a peaceful resolution," officer Parker said.This is a breaking story. GUILDERLAND, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The New York State Office of Fire Prevention is warning against using sparklers around the Fourth of July holiday. State Fire Administrator James Cable said over 11,000 people are injured every year for firework related injuries. KERHONKSON, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A Kerhonkson man pleaded guilty on Tuesday to unlawfully possessing a rifle as a previously convicted felon, according to the Department of Justice (DOJ). Bram Fox, 43, also admitted to manufacturing and possessing several dozen firearms, which law enforcement seized from his Ulster County home earlier this year. According to the DOJ, Fox admitted that from around October 2020 until January 2023, he purchased firearm parts from several online retailers, had the items shipped to his home in Kerhonkson, and used the parts to manufacture non-serialized handguns and rifles, also known as "ghost guns." ST. LOUIS - Authorities recovered several guns from a Downtown St. Louis apartment party over the weekend. The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department reports that the guns were recovered in the 300 block of North 10th Street. Officers responded to the scene on an undisclosed time and date after a disturbance call. A fast-moving wildfire in western Colorado south of Parachute was burning on more than 2,577 acres Tuesday morning amid increasing winds, authorities said.This Spring Creek fire, which started over the weekend, was spreading across private land in Garfield County and had entered the White River National Forest, according to bulletins and a map posted early Tuesday by the Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire Management Unit.The cause wasn’t clear. A California man vacationing in Europe recently captured video of a tourist vandalizing the Colosseum in Rome.Orange resident Ryan Lutz was on a two-month tour of Europe when he shot the video. “Like a lot of Americans, I probably, you know, saw 'Gladiator' back in the early 2000s … and got entranced by ancient Rome … Yeah, I wanted to see it and it came to life,” Lutz said. But his visit was ruined when he found a guy carving his name into one of the Seven Wonders of the World. A man was shot and wounded in downtown Los Angeles early Tuesday morning, and police are looking for the shooter.The attack was reported at 4:04 a.m. at 801 S. Hope St., according to Officer Madison of the Los Angeles Police Department.The victim, a man, was sitting in his vehicle when the shooter approached the car, opened fire an unknown number of times and fled, Madison said.The man was taken to a local hospital with a gunshot wound to his left shoulder, and he is in stable condition.The shooter was last seen fleeing the scene in a dark-colored sedan, Madison said.Nancy Fontan contributed to this report.'Titanic' actor Lew Palter dies at 94

Actor Lew Palter, who starred in "Titanic" and "First Monday in October" has died. He was 94.Palter died of lung cancer on May 21 at his home in Los Angeles, according to Deadline.The longtime stage and screen actor was also faculty at CalArts School of Theater in Santa Clarita, California. "It is with great sadness that we share the news that longtime #calartstheater faculty Lew Palter has passed away.
