Mary Jo Lindeberg is 81, but she has never stopped wondering: Who is she, really? She was born in St. Paul, just weeks after Pearl Harbor. She was adopted by an oral surgeon and his office nurse. They changed her name from Carol Louise to Mary Jo and raised her as their own.And for most of a century, she’s carried unanswered questions.“As a kid, I remembered having the fantasy of — oh, I bet my real mom was probably a beauty star and my father was probably a leader of industry,” she said. “Well, we all know that’s probably not the case.”She just doesn’t know. It’s a story common to many families — a secret birth, a new identity and a new love for a child — but also often decades of speculation and separation. For children born in Minnesota, adoptees get a new birth certificate and the details of their actual birth are sealed — their disclosure subject to a parental veto or to secrecy clauses in decades-old adoption agreements. It’s happened thousands of times a year in the past. But a ...Hits hard to come by as Saints fall 2-0 to Clippers

Brent Headrick was slated to start for the St. Paul Saints on Sunday for their afternoon game against the Columbus Clippers, but plans changed for the Saints when Headrick was recalled by the Twins ahead of the game.St. Paul turned to the bullpen and got terrific efforts from four relievers, who allowed just three hits, but they weren’t enough as the Saints mustered just three hits themselves in a 2-0 loss at Huntington Park in Columbus, Ohio.Trevor Larnach had two of the Saints’ three hits, going 2 for 4 with a double, while Gilberto Celestino had the other, a single that helped set up the Saints’ best scoring chance in the third inning. But the Saints (18-15) never found a way to break through.Kody Funderburk got the start after Headrick was recalled, putting in 2 1/3 innings of work and holding Columbus (16-16) to one run on one hit. Patrick Murphy allowed the other run in the sixth inning, a solo home run from Bryan Lavastida. OAKLAND — Alex Cobb sat and stewed. All he could do was watch as the Giants’ lead evaporated in the sixth inning of an eventual 8-6 loss Sunday afternoon to the Oakland A’s.Removed with one out in the sixth, after throwing only 77 pitches, the Giants’ All-Star starter watched from the bench in the first-base dugout as Brandon Crawford bounced a throw to first base. He rested his head in his hands as Luke Jackson, called on to relieve him, walked back-to-back batters, forcing in a run.Cobb remained there for all of it, unable to do anything about it, as the ugly inning culminated in a go-ahead base hit from Shea Langeliers, unloading the bases with a line drive over the glove of a leaping J.D. Davis, after manager Gabe Kapler refused to pull his erratic reliever from the game. All told, the Giants (61-51) wasted one of their best offensive performances of the past month-plus, as well as both of their best opportunities to pick up wins before beginning a daunting stret...Oakland A’s legends watch team even Bay Bridge Series behind Allen’s home runs

OAKLAND – Before Sunday’s game against the San Francisco Giants, the Oakland A’s inducted five legendary Athletics into the team’s hall of fame.Jason Giambi, the 2000 AL MVP who hit 241 home runs in eight seasons in the East Bay, was among those honored. If one had to pick a current A’s player to replicate one of Giambi’s moonshots, 5-8 Nick Allen would probably not be near the top of the list. But after hitting just a single home run in his first 59 games, Allen tripled his season total, slamming two over the left field wall with a who’s-who of A’s legends in attendance. His surprising home runs keyed an 8-6 Oakland (32-80) win that tied the two-game series against the Giants (61-51). While the pregame was all about celebrating the past, great performances from young players gave the fans a glimpse into what could be a bright future. The Oakland offense’s unexpected shot in the arm from light-hitting Allen was even more surprising given his splits and who he was facin...Giambi, Henderson opine on Oakland A’s likely relocation to Las Vegas

OAKLAND — A warm applause greeted Jason Giambi as Tony La Russa introduced him as the Oakland A’s latest Hall of Fame inductee. It was a bit surprising given the way Giambi left a 102-win Oakland team for the New York Yankees and a lucrative contract 12 years ago.Giambi fleeing town was a slap in fans’ faces, so his comments in March that the team’s potential relocation to Las Vegas would “be amazing” served as a gut punch. Giambi doubled down on his pro-Vegas thoughts in the minutes before the A’s Hall of Fame ceremony on Sunday afternoon prior to the final Bay Bridge Series game against the San Francisco Giants.“If you’re a fan, you’re going to follow your team no matter what,” Giambi said. “That’s the part that’s exciting, the buzz in Vegas. There are a lot of great players that have come out of there. (Bryce) Harper, (Joey) Gallo, Kris Bryant.
